On the Farm 01.03.08

Today it was not only cold, but windy. Here’s my lunch break routine:

Fill a pail with hot water from the kitchen sink.

Bundle up. Look like some kind of vagrant. A very warm vagrant.

Deliver hot water to the hens. Take yesterday’s hot water delivery pail, which is now a block of ice, back to the house to thaw out. Repeat tomorrow, swapping pails again.

You can tell it’s windy when the cattle are hanging out in and around the shed, instead of standing around the bale feeder eating themselves warm.

Hmm… I do the same thing everyday also … except my bucket is smaller (only five hens) and I don’t bother to bundle up because water and feed is the only chore (besides picking up a couple eggs in the afternoon) that I really have to do each day. I just run really fast!

I had to laugh at your description of looking like a vagrant. My grandmother owned the world’s largest collection of hideously ugly winter hats. Besides bundling up in 35 articles of clothing (that didn’t match) to do winter chores she would top each outfit off with one of the hats. We all lived in fear that she would one day wear one of them in public. Now I live in fear that my mother, who for some reason kept the hat collection when Nana died, will start wearing them.

My Happy Honey bought me a pair of carhart insulated bibs, a funny ear flappy furry hat and a warm hoodie so I’d be warm when I went to do chores…The other day I was outside, dressed in my finery when a truck load of guy hunters went by…They gave me the guy nod..ya know, that slight nod of the head country guys give other country guys…ya uh huh…They thought I was a guy which is not really a bad thing considering how I was dressed :):)

I admire you bunch of farmers that live up north. The other morning it was in the mid 20’s here in Brenham Texas and I dreaded going out in the morning to open everything up. By noon it was near 50 degrees which is just right. Yall are true winter troopers.

  5. ethan – I’m a huge wimp when it comes to the cold!stacy – I think I’m turning into your Nana. Notice I’m wearing a hat on top of a hat? Ha ha!Patti – I always hope when someone drives by and I’m out there all bundled up that people will just think I’m Matt ;)Kramer – I read that you’re rotatilling. I’m so jealous!
