Peas

I think whatever we’re harvesting at the moment is my favorite. Tonight it was peas. So sweet eaten straight from the pod. Olivia’s technique is “one for the bowl, one for my mouth.”

I cannot fathom how many peas we would have to plant in order to have a significant enough yield to freeze any for winter. Each year I fill a bowl with pods, thinking I’ve reaped quite the harvest.

And then they’re shucked.

And we’ve got just enough for one meal.

A sidedish.

Several of my cousins have come up with a theory that anything green shrinks when you are ready to eat it– either from cooking or shucking. The more I think about it, the truer it seems.

This is a good observation. The few times we have grown beans we have always had a nice, though small, harvest, even across the whole summer.

  4. Beastmomma – now that you say that, I agree. Green things shrink!Pablo – beans we don’t have any problem getting enough of. We’re still eating last year’s frozen beans.Thank you, Sonia!
