Thaw

Normally I love our creek. It’s serene, and calming, and attracts a wonderful variety of wildlife.

But I don’t love it this time of year. All of the land around us drains right through the middle of our farm, water racing to get to the creek.

Here’s the creek at a normal level:

And here’s what it looked like today:

Here’s another view:

Of course to a 6-year-old boy with a stick, it’s heaven.

Here’s Matt’s attempt at using little snowpiles to divert the water around the cattle/hog shed, so that it’s not running right through the pigs’ sleeping area:

He ended up letting them out of their pen to bunk in the feeder calves’ pen, hoping they could find a dry enough spot in there. We so need a real pig barn. But with the cost of feed right now, we might not even have pigs after this year anyway.

When I first started looking at this post and saw the beautiful, peaceful photo of your creek, I was all ready to post a gushing comment about the beauty of it all. Then with the subsequent photos, my jaw just dropped lower and lower. Wow!Are you guys in a flood plain, or what? What’s that old saying “Lord Willing, and the Creek Don’t Rise”Well, your creek sure puts a touch of reality into that saying! Thanks for sharing all the ups and downs of living life on your farm. You really do provide a touch of reality among all of the magic of farm life. And I hope there are more ups then downs in Sugar Creek Farm’s future.

I bet it is beautiful in the spring there. I hope the pigs find dry land!:) Just keep telling yourself Spring is coming. I love looking at your pictures. What camera do you use?

  3. Spring is coming, spring is coming and ALL THIS WATER AND MUD will eventually go away. Our cattle sheds are saturated and sopping wet too. Pretty creek though – wish I had one.Kris

  4. twinville – our house stays high and dry. It’s mainly just that all of the water runs off the surrounding fields, right through the middle of our farm, and into the creek. Things were better today because the temperatures only got to about 39, so things weren’t melting so fast.sea2shore – I have a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTkris – that’s what I keep telling myself, too!

Oh my, I can so relate to the water and flooding. Except that we live on a river and have creeks on both sides. Our house stays dry too but further out, around the barn, corrals and calf lot…mush. Yuck. It’ll dry up sooner than later. Enjoy the season 😉
