What do you do when you send the rest of the family to the fair to watch the demolition derby, and find yourself with an evening at home all to yourself?

Please tell me you venture out into your garden, pick various and sundry vegetables, and then line them all up for a family portrait.

No? Well, don’t I feel a little weird now.

I love the alien look of the kohlrabi.

Lovely, lovely cucumbers that I plan to slice up and have with onions and dressing. The recipe comes from an old church cookbook and includes the instructions “dressing can be reused up to three times before throwing out.” Indeed.

Broccoli. Nom, nom.

And yes, I even love that overachiever of garden vegetables, the zucchini.

I’m hoping I’ve guessed at the ripeness of this watermelon correctly.

A peck of to-be-pickled peppers.

It was a nice surprise to find so many things in the garden tonight, hanging on in the midst of this awful drought!

    That is such a lovely picture. The weathered boards contrast with the freshness of the vegetables. It’s the magic of summertime. I have so many memories of the garden and the fondest are those times at the end of the day when I could wander and pick some things just for the joy of it. I know how each of those plants smell and what you had to do to make sure they were picture perfect–the washing, trimming and turning the best side to the camera. I’d love to sit on the edge of that lovely porch, have a glass of tea with you and contemplate your garden. It is for such quiet pauses as this that we remember our gardens with so much love. I don’t know how it is possible for those moments to make up for all the dirty toil, sore muscles, itching, varmints and disappointments but, somehow, they do.

    Yes, I understand how you could head to the garden and take delight in what you found there. I take great pleasure in bringing the garden’s bounty but it is usually early morning.
    My method to pick watermelons, which I feel is fool proof, is when the first curl that comes out of the melon is brown, it is ripe.
